There's just something about writing music in the living room next to your fiancée, as compared to being alone with a computer and drum machines in the basement...
You know I love the beats, but this week calls for some time on the piano bench. No, not even those electro-mechanical Rhodes tones I typically flock to, but just simply raw piano (albeit with plenty of reverb…).
After writing the basic melody and chord progression on my Korg SV-1 and rehearsing for a few hours, I ultimately sat down with my MIDI controller and recorded the parts in using the built-in HALion sampling instrument in Cubase (set to the excellent Yamaha S90ES piano preset). I tried my best to work through a range of dynamics (velocity) on the keys, but wanted to take things even further with automated delay and reverb sends to really put certain parts over the top. What would I do without the OhmBoyz delay and Valhalla reverb units?
Finally, we bring in some subtle low end with my new studio addition, the MS-20 Mini. Done!
